Why is My Air Conditioning Making a Noise?

January 19th, 2017 by adtrak.admin

Depending on your air conditioner’s age, where it is fitted and how often maintenance is carried out on it, you may find that it has started to make a few loud sounds during operation. Whilst certain noises are normal when the unit is switched on, some sounds can indicate a problem with the system which will require the expertise of a licensed professional.

Here, we will explain the type of noises which may signify that there is an issue with your air conditioner and the reasons why, so you know when to call upon the expertise of an air conditioning expert.

Air Conditioning Making a Noise

Why is my air con unit making a loud buzzing sound?

If your air conditioner has become damaged, one of the most common noises you may hear is a loud buzzing sound. If this is the case in your home and it has become a distraction, your unit is probably malfunctioning. This could be due to a number of reasons:

  • Unbalanced compressor – if the compressor has become unbalanced inside the unit, it can cause a loud buzzing noise whilst the air conditioner is in operation.
  • Frozen unit – if the refrigerant has leaked inside the system, it can cause your air conditioner to freeze up, resulting in a buzzing sound.
  • Loose parts – your air conditioning unit is made up of many different parts, so if something becomes loose or is missing, it may cause other parts of the system to become worn and damaged, creating the buzzing sound.

What other sounds might my air conditioner make if it is damaged?

  1. Squealing

Symptom: During operation, you may notice a squealing sound from inside the unit.

Cause: The belt which connects the fan and motor on certain models has most likely become misaligned or worn. The sound might vary due to changes in temperature and humidity levels which causes the belt to expand and contract.

  1. Screaming

Symptom: A high-pitched screaming sound from the outside of the unit during operation which may frequently stop and start again.

Cause: This is probably caused by a buildup of high pressure in your system which results in the compressor making a screaming sound.

  1. Banging/rattling

Symptom: Your outdoor unit makes a banging sound which stops when you turn your thermostat to ‘fan’.

Cause: This sound is probably being caused by your outdoor unit’s fan hitting something in its way or loosening and hitting the inside of the unit.

  1. Humming

Symptom: The unit makes a humming sound during operation.

Cause: This is usually caused by an electrical issue, such as old or loose electrical connections, or the air conditioning unit has frozen up.

  1. Clicking

Symptom: Repetitive clicking sounds from the outside unit that speeds up as the air conditioner turns on.

Cause: A small obstruction such as a stone or piece of debris may be stuck in the fan.
