Commercial Kitchen Ventilation Regulations

July 29th, 2016 by adtrak.admin

Proper ventilation plays an important role in maintaining a clean, hygienic environment inside commercial kitchens, where a great deal of heat is generated in a confined space. As such, it’s important for those in charge of a commercial kitchen to ensure the relevant ventilation regulations are followed to protect the health and safety of both staff and visitors.

Here, we will take a closer look at the regulations regarding ventilation for commercial kitchens, and why it is so important for kitchen environments to have sufficient ventilation fitted.

Commercial Kitchen Ventilation Regulations

Legal requirements

The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 state that employers should “provide effective and suitable ventilation in every enclosed workplace. This includes kitchens, which need ventilation to create a safe and comfortable working environment.”   Those who do not adhere to these regulations are at risk of having their commercial kitchen closed down, so it’s imperative that the ventilation system is installed, used and looked after correctly for guaranteed safety.

Better air quality

The nature of a commercial kitchen means it can quickly become very hot and steamy which, without the correct ventilation in place, can irritate eyes and cause respiratory problems. In turn, this cause employees to become stressed with their working conditions which can impact safety in the workplace and can contribute towards a high turnover of staff.

A fully functional ventilation system will not only remove excess hot air from inside the kitchen, but will also expel cooking fumes to keep the air as clean as possible.

Improved odour control

When fitted correctly, a ventilator will stop cooking smells from lingering inside the kitchen and spreading into the area where customers are eating. Not only with this help to improve hygiene levels and cleanliness, but it will also create a more enjoyable cooking and eating experience.

Easy to clean

The low maintenance, easy to clean qualities of kitchen ventilation makes it ideally suited in commercial kitchens where speed is of the essence. It prevents any accumulation of fat and grease in the system which can affect its efficiency and increase the risk of fire. As such, regular maintenance should be carried out on ventilation systems to encourage a high performance and prevent any energy from being wasted.

According to the HSE, ventilation equipment “should be installed by a competent person. The equipment installer needs to know the design performance and capacity of the ventilation system, so they can ensure adequate ventilation.” If the system is improperly fitted, the health and safety of both employees and visitors is compromised, particularly if it is a gas-fired appliance.
